Before you buy a used Toyota Corolla abroad, check two things: whether your country bans cars above a certain age, and whether import fees rise with age. The 2020–2025 Corollas we supply are young enough for most limits in 2026, but the oldest units can fall outside the strictest rules — and the way “age” is counted (year of manufacture or first registration) matters.
Age rules at a glance
| Country | Rule (summary) | Corolla years that usually fit in 2026 | Authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kenya | Used cars up to 8 years from year of first registration | 2019 onward — all 2020–2025 cars | Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) |
| Ghana | Most vehicles over 10 years old prohibited (Act 1014) | All 2020–2025 cars | Ghana Revenue Authority |
| Nigeria | Import prohibition list has covered vehicles over 15 years from manufacture | All 2020–2025 cars | Nigeria Customs Service |
| Ethiopia | 2024 restriction on non-electric private car imports | Check before ordering — depends on vehicle use | Ethiopian Customs Commission |
| Russia | No ban; customs and recycling fees depend on age band and power | Often 2021–2023 (3–5 year band) | Federal Customs Service |
| Peru | Strict age and mileage limits for used light vehicles | Usually 2024–2025, low mileage | SUNAT |
| Kyrgyzstan, Armenia | EAEU rules: duty depends on engine size and age | All years; newer cars pay differently | National customs services |
Kenya: the 8-year rule
Kenya allows used cars up to eight years old, counted from the year of first registration, under the KEBS standard for road vehicle inspection. In 2026 that means cars first registered in 2019 or later. Every Corolla we offer qualifies, and many Kenyan buyers aim for 2021–2023 cars to keep a resale margin before they age out. Note that Kenya drives on the left; the China-market Corolla is left-hand drive, so confirm with your agent whether LHD registration is allowed for your use.
Ghana and Nigeria: room to choose
Ghana’s Customs (Amendment) Act, 2020 (Act 1014) prohibits salvaged vehicles and, with limited exceptions, vehicles over 10 years old. Nigeria’s import prohibition list has long covered vehicles more than 15 years from manufacture. Both drive on the right, and all 2020–2025 Corollas fit with years to spare — so buyers there usually choose on budget: a 2020 or 2021 Corolla for the lowest price, or a 2023 hybrid for the newer 101 kW system.
Ethiopia: fuel type matters more than age
In 2024 Ethiopia moved to restrict imports of non-electric private vehicles. Rules for hybrids and for company or fleet vehicles have been revised more than once, so confirm the current position before you buy — our Ethiopia guide explains the route via Djibouti.
Russia and Central Asia: age bands, not bans
Russia does not ban older cars, but customs payments and the recycling fee are calculated by age band, engine size and power. Many importers target cars in the 3–5 year band, which in 2026 points to 2021–2023 Corollas. Kyrgyzstan and Armenia apply Eurasian Economic Union rules with their own national fees. Ask your broker for the current table before choosing a year.
How “age” is counted
- Year of manufacture — on the vehicle’s nameplate and in its documents.
- Year of first registration — on the Chinese registration certificate. A car built late in one year can be first registered early the next.
- China “model year” — the 款 label. A “2019 model year” Corolla can be built and registered in 2020, which is why we list it as a 2020 car.
